Can it a "here and now" religion exist without promising anything in the afterlife, yet be taken seriously.

wrong again, alex.
there is no current (satisfactory) definition
to 'religion'.
it was once decided to figure out the
qualities that define religion. several
people sat down and thunk on it.
the goal was to define religion in as few
qualities as possible so that when it
was said and done, something still looked
like a religion.
reduced to its final prime, religion was
defined in seven qualities, none of which
are 'retrobution after death'.
(if you want that list, let me know)
in the meantime, humor me into giving me
your definition of religion.

Religion must address the four fundamental questions.
1. what is life
2. why is there suffering
3. what happens after death
4. why is the universe present (i think)
otherwise it cannot be classified as a 'religion' so it's usually called a cult.
